There is the "community" reason as well. old voat was closed to outsiders sometimes; i wouldn't mind if new voat blocked those not logged in and didn't allow registrations for a while.

Or a different one. It's pretty easy to figure out a hashing technique you can remember. Hash the username plus something you can derive or remember.
