Olympia from the 1938 olympics

Psycho and Double Indemnity are classic.

I prefer just White movies. Just joking, my 5V is rarely on. I tend to watch crime stuff (48 hours or crime documentaries.)

Maltese Falcon
Passage to Marseille
Key Largo
African Queen
Caine Mutiny
Red River
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Shane
High Noon

[ - ] VitaminSieg 1 point 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 10:11:06 ago (+1/-0)

The Caine Mutiny and Shane are in colour, and High Noon is one of the most unamerican films ever made.

[ - ] HughBriss 0 points 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 10:20:23 ago (+0/-0)

I agree with you on High Noon. That's exactly what John Wayne said about it, which is why he turned down the lead role. Plus, African Queen was in color also.

[ - ] spasswerk 0 points 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 11:42:56 ago (+0/-0)

Expand on that idea if you would (High Noon). I have never heard that theory.

[ - ] HughBriss 0 points 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 12:09:42 ago (+0/-0)

Not a theory. That's what a lot of people thought of it. Many saw it as an allegory about blacklisting.

The same reference goes on to state that it became a favorite of conservatives as well. Instead of cancelling the film due to political undertones I prefer to think of it as a cinematically excellent, groundbreaking western with the theme of one man standing for right despite overwhelming opposition. A worthy movie if just for the cinematic quality.

[ - ] HughBriss 0 points 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 22:29:36 ago (+0/-0)

Whatever you like. Especially if it involves who you consider "conservative". I don't consider Ronald Reagan right wing, but he was definitely a conservative, which to me means he had no real values other than what other "conservatives" said what conservatism means.

[ - ] spasswerk 0 points 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 22:45:13 ago (+0/-0)

Perhaps he just liked it because he saw cowboys! Quality film making, worthy central character, I recommend it as a great film to watch as entertainment. If we get too deeply into the politics of movies we'll eschew almost all of them.

[ - ] HughBriss 0 points 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 22:47:00 ago (+0/-0)

Crap movie, crap plot, disgusting characters. The movie is all about politics. I gave you the link. Stop arguing with me about the subtext, faggot.

[ - ] spasswerk 0 points 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 22:54:39 ago (+0/-0)

Oh boy, insults! This is why I come here. Take your huge briss out of my film class or I'll have campus security come in and insult you in yiddish. You almost made me forget Sands of Iwo Jima! Next paper is on the theme of initiation in Sands and Godfather, compare and contrast the two main characters in each.

Yojimbo
Seven Samurai
Hidden Fortress

[ - ] gat 0 points 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 09:55:37 ago (+0/-0)

Seven Samurai is probably the best movie ever made.. that's also black and white.

[ - ] HughBriss 2 points 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 10:24:21 ago (+2/-0)

I'd add Rashomon to that.

Gaslight
His Girl Friday
The Thin Man
Birth of a Nation

[ - ] spasswerk 1 point 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 22:14:35 ago (+1/-0)

The Birth of a Nation has been cancelled. It's a shame since it introduced a number of techniques that later became standard in visual storytelling. Exciting visual stuff for 1914 but it's difficult to get many people to sit still for the story.

[ - ] AloisH 3 points 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 01:58:49 ago (+3/-0)

Night of the Living Dead should be at the top. My favorite part is where they shoot the nigger at the end

[ - ] Metanoid 2 points 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 03:11:27 ago (+2/-0)

Arsenic and Old Lace
The Maltese Falcon
To Have and Have Not
The Dictator
M (Fritz Lang)
The Big Heat
Metropolis
Duck Soup

[ - ] spasswerk 0 points 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 11:44:45 ago (+0/-0)

Duck soup is a series of skits patched together in a way that works, not unlike The Holy Grail. Funny jewish (ADHD) humor. Underrated.

Things to Come for the great sci-fi spectacle.

Jesus Christ people most the movies on this list boring snobby hipster trash.

Mutiny on the Bounty the 1935 one

Some Like it Hot

the only two old black and white movies that are actually good.

I forgot about night of the living dead and psycho. Those two are really good.

I expected to see Citizen Kane in each list, if not at the top. But as of writing it's only been suggested once. Hmmmmm.

[ - ] allahead 0 points 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 16:51:14 ago (+0/-0)

It's pretty boring.

[ - ] asdf23 0 points 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 10:17:35 ago (+0/-0)

You can't take it with you

[ - ] HughBriss 0 points 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 10:32:54 ago (+0/-0)

This is a great idea. I don't watch movies more recent that about 1980, so I've been building a library of classic movies. I've seen many of these, but some I haven't, so I'll give them a look. Thanks for the suggestions.

I compiled everything suggested so far into an alphabetical list. Presented here for your convenience.

Sure.

[ - ] spasswerk 0 points 3.9 yearsAug 1, 2021 22:57:31 ago (+0/-0)

How can we forget The Sands of Iwo jima? Seemingly a John Wayne feature, it is actually the story of a soft young boy discovering that he needs to become a man. Saddle up!

safety last, the freshman, why worry, girl shy, and never weaken from Harold Lloyd are all great
