I spent most of my time in the military in the South. I can tell you from experience that what does not come through in that picture is the oppressive humidity and the ferocious mosquitoes. Nevertheless, I loved living in the South and I hope to retire there.

We actually had a pretty nice breeze yesterday. It's usually really humid and buggy, but it was really a nice time for a walk. You take those days when you get them.

Nice. I lived in states along the Southeastern seaboard, the Gulf coast states, and Tennessee. It was an adjustment for me, because I had lived all of my life in California, which is hot but dry. Living in rural areas in the South I always appreciated the quietude, the sounds of nature, and seeing unspoiled areas like your picture shows.

The place I took that picture is pretty fucking magic. I've seen deer, bison, gators, otters and wild horses out there. I use to live in south Florida, right beside the ocean. I miss it and intend to move back. In the meantime I actively search for places like the one pictured.

When I lived in New Orleans, sometimes I'd take long drives to see things I never saw before. I figured that's what I was living in Louisiana in the first place, so I should make the most of it. I don't remember exactly where, but at Bayou Barataria in the Jean Lafitte preserve I recall seeing small alligators out in the water. A bit farther on the trail, I came across an enormous spider web, complete with enormous spider in the center of it, blocking the path. I figured that was enough nature for one day because I wasn't going to mess with it. All in all, it was a good outing that day.

Probably not. The one I saw, spread out on the web, was as large as my hand with all of my fingers extended. It was mostly legs, very long legs. I have a rule of thumb with nature: Don't come in my house, and I won't mess with you, and if I go in your habitat, I'll leave you alone. I'll be honest, it scared the crap out of me, but I can't begrudge a spider just doing its spider thing where it lives.

My family's third husky would not stop attempting to howl as a pup. Attempting because it was shit howls at the time. We couldn't agree on a name. My dego friend of all that was there says, "How about Banshee?" My semi-Irish family agreed. Banshee it is!
