A double yellow line can be crossed at 90 degrees, so vehicles could cross the road from one side to another. A second set of yellow lines indicates that under no circumstance should a vehicle cross the road, acting as an invisible barrier.

I found out after arguing with a cop, which was after crossing a double double yellow line. In the end he let me go, and I was wiser for it.

Yea, its the low-cost replacement for a physical barrier. Lately though the fucktards are replacing every median with physical barriers, and physical barriers with bigger ones. All the while ignoring the back roads.
