You don't realize how stupid you sound. This is a maximally refined fully chromatic western instrument with an easy 2 octave range, far ahead of everything that came before and inspired it. The basic design is cross-cultural and old as time, but this one is perfect. It was popular during the renaissance and baroque periods. If you like western culture and music, this is the instrument for you.
I have Yamaha soprano and alto plastic recorders in baroque fingering and I play them often. I lose nothing compared to my cedar native american flutes except perhaps the more complex fingerings and smaller holes make portamento more difficult. OTOH the range and discreet pitches offer far more flexibility. It's not that I can't play Bach on the native flute. I can, beautifully, and I still like the timbre of the larger cedar flutes. But it's a lot easier on the superior western instrument.
Also, the wind requirements are so low on my soprano that my infant daughter, who can't walk, is able to hold a note.
This might be the most underrated instrument of the modern era.
I think the point is more that it's fucking ridiculous for tax payer money to be spent on teaching absolutely pointless skills. You get plenty of people learning history, music, or dead languages but have you ever heard of a public school teaching how to use any industrial equipment or even a cash register?
Aw I love playing the recorder. I have several, including the bigger ones that play in a lower range. It's a beautiful instrument outside of a class of 8-year-olds. Sorry you hated music class :(
