Or just, ya know, regular apartments with mixed commercial/accommodation arrangements. Most of the cinemas around me have been rebuilt as apartments even before the wuflu.

Shopping malls, movie theaters, virtually any venue that is intended to accommodate large numbers of people, these are all at risk of no one wanting them any more. The owner goes bankrupt or abandons the property and slowly but increasingly it falls into disrepair and decay.

This is our future. Our immediate future. Because the time horizon is relatively short once it begins. The decay of the things that were a mainstay our our upbringing and self identity are now unwanted and discarded but still front and center in our daily lives.

Welcome to our new reality.

I think the next generation will be spending a lot of time on thinking about and then implementing the re-purposing of these spaces. I've been thinking about what to do with the big mall near my house for a while now. It has massive skylights in it so I'm thinking turn it into a green house for the winter time. But then I think of how that will cause a lot of damage to the inside from the dampness. Then I think how will it be heated in the winter, how will we keep the roof from leaking? Big structure needs constant upkeep. When the Soviet Union collapsed, there was endless work to be had in tearing down the old infrastructure for scrap metal. Scrap metal $ was about all that was left for the future generations.

Here’s an explanation. https://aesthetics.fandom.com/wiki/Liminal_Space Hopefully he’s posting it in the context of the collapse of Western civilization and not simply “ha ha funny may may.” But then again, strip malls can feel free to die forever, product of the postwar world that they are.

Didn't realize there was a word for this kind of setting. I always described it as "feeling as if I'm in the ruins of an ancient civilization."
