My squirrel lets me pet her this way when she is bedding down at night. She loves a good petting. Never would have thought before I rescued her that squirrels enjoy something like that. But I guess every living thing probably likes to be scratched and patted by a trusting hand.

Almost. I think they saw fear on my face. It was a different species, and in a small dog cage hidden under towels and under boxes in back of car. They searched the towel covered item first and ignored opening cardboard boxes. I tried saying the towels kept it calm and sleepy, to make it less like I was a smuggler. They could tell it was my pet.
