As a hedge against inflation. Year over year consumer price index increased 8.3%, the largest year over year price increase in history. Putting your money in a savings account will earn you 0.01%-0.1% interest on your savings. The value of gold is stable. As inflation increases and the value of the fiat dollar decreases, your wealth is protected from inflation by being locked in a gold reserve. The price per ounce of gold has dropped recently with the let up of quantitative easing, but the US dollar has lost 98% of it's value since 1913, and 40% of all Federal Reserve Notes ever printed were printed last year in 2020. Storing your savings in gold is a hedge against inflation.
In the situation where youd be bartering with gold, i will trade with you nothing. You can not have my food, my animals, my guns and ammo, my women, or reside within my domain. Your gold has absolutely zero value within my domain. I crave not shiny trinkets.
The people telling you gold will have no value in an economic collapse are lying to you. Gold was still valuable in Iraq during the Iraq War. Gold was still valuable in Afghanistan. Gold was still valuable in Germany at the end of WWII. Gold was valuable in the Revolutionary War. Gold was valuable in Georgia when General Sherman was committing his scorched earth policy against the CSA. Gold is valuable in Venezuela right now. Gold was especially valuable during the Napoleonic wars. Gold is the only asset with intrinsic value. Gold has always had value, gold is valuable now, and gold will always be valuable in the future. People will always accept gold.
Gold was valuable to the Inca and the Aztecs and the Spanish. Gold was valuable to the Ancient Egyptians. Gold was valuable to the Sumerians. Gold was valuable to the Persians. Gold was valuable to the Greeks and the Romans. Gold was valuable to the Mongols. Gold was valuable to the Han Chinese. Gold was valuable to Guals, Huns, and Magyars. Gold is always valuable.
Only buy gold as a store of value. Gold will have value, stable value, hardly dipping but also hardly gaining, no matter what. Maybe allocate 10% of your savings as a hedge against inflation/stock market crash.
If you are worried about society collapsing, first gather sufficient water, food, and firearms. precious metals will retain some kind of value for the rebuilding period following the collapse. Stack metals for that scenario.
Crypto is probably better, unless you are worried about the entire internet going down worldwide. Which isn't impossible I suppose.
Just be aware, gold is a speculation, not an investment as some have said. You are speculating that the price of a currency or good will change relative to its value. Have some, yes. Buy it when the price is good but it won't "work" for you like a dividend stock or renting out a property. I just buy whatever assets are undervalued at the time of purchase. That has always done me well.
Depends on how you think the current trajectory will play out.
If the govts are successful in their war on the unvaxxed and the sheeple win, (and you get the jab to stay alive), then society will most likely not collapse and gold will remain an investment.
If the unvaxxed somehow manage to cause enough chaos before their ultimate demise that society ceases as we know it, then gold is of no more importance than anything else people will barter with.
Bartering in a dystopian future will mainly be done with anything people trust - something that cannot be easily forged. Gold as an everyday trading commodity can be done, although fiat currency is much easier to deal with.
An interesting perspective on collapsed society economics:
You have a calling for aztec treasure and a drive to kill all in your way to get what you want. Otherwise you like shinny paperweights. There's really not another reason why.
I'd sell people shots of moonshine for their gold during a collapse. I'd probably have to give them change in silver though. Moonshine isn't that expensive and I wouldn't price-gouge too much. I'm not an asshole.
In a collapse sugar will become a rapidly rare luxury. Moonshine as a downstream product will thereby be of a higher price. Hold out correctly and you won't be needing to return any change.

Unlike houses, businesses, shares, bonds, treasuries, money in bank, cash in every form.

But with enough guns, you will survive anything.

Buy books that will teach you self sufficiency and trade skills. Learn those skills now, while you have the time.
You should be able to show up to an area with nothing and be able to build a homestead from what the land gives you.
