I interpret this as the figurative “herding cats” trope. Am I thinking too hard about it?

I have this short story in one of my kids books and every time I read it to them I get very mad at this man. He takes all these cats home and can't feed them so he has them fight to the death until one is left. His wife isn't better because she goes along with it.
