Ive had good luck with my sawyer mini filter, granted I've only relied on it once, but the nearly stagnant water i drank all weekend didnt make me sick.

Agreed, Sawyer mini is the goto for a BOB. It's $20 and very small.

Katadyn is a good brand.

Had the Vario for almost a decade, internals aren't the cheapest to replace but it does the job very well.

One of those filter straws for short term camping, A small stil for long term shtf (as if shtf the water supplies are liking going to be tainted pretty quickly, Lots of coastal nuclear reactors and chemical plants that might end up getting in to the water supply)

Ferro rod and a decent fixed blade knife. Para cord, as well.

Berkey is the gold standard. We have been using one for over 2 years and it's great.

A book about local wild edibles

Not for camping but the Berkey system is very good. Might be a good gift depending on what the occasion is.
Lightweight camp cookware is a great gift.
Anarchists cookbook or maybe a bushwacking 101 book might be nice gifts too.

Can confirm Berkey is great. You can put raw sewage in a berkey and it will come out cleaner than city tap water. The black filters it comes with can last up to two years and you can get additional add on filters for flouride.

Zero water is probably the best and cheapest.

This is what I use. (Well the larger household sized model.)

That little Sawyer one is handy. Depending on the situation though, it might be nice to have one with a pump

I have the "royal" that holds around 3.4 gallons. It is pretty darn slow. I am not sure if it would still do as good of a job if was pumped/pressured through the filter.

I mean a hand pump.
I took a trip to the BWCA in Minnesota (plug for beginning your trip at Canoe Country Outfitters in Ely), and we had to gather water. We boiled all the water for food, but for drinking we just pumped it straight into our bottes. But of course, your mileage may vary if not bugging out into the land of a thousand lakes.

That water is really clean up there.
I think a few brands have pumps. Maybe lifestraw?
What were you fishing for? I have caught rainbows and brown's in that water. Also a bunch of lake fish. I have heard of a few streams that are great for small mouth. Just miles of fish. You go fly or bobber/worm?

[ - ] NeoNazirite 0 points 3.7 yearsSep 25, 2021 22:23:12 ago (+0/-0)

Pike, walleye, and smallies. We don't have them down in East Texas. And they were damn tasty.
I remember a rattletrap with red hooks working out well in the lakes. I never fly fished but seeing it done in snake river near Yellowstone, I believe I was witness to peak outdoorsman.

Fly fishing on the snake river is a mecca. I have most of the gear, but I havent set up any trips yet.
Maybe I will go to snake river one day. I had a subscription to the drake magazine for a while. It talked about snake river and a bunch of other places. Unfortunately, I didn't renew because they were pozzed and just had to educate their audience on the dangers of a free society.
