Lots of good advice in this thread, more so than usual with these conversations in any event, and I'd like to chime in here.
I see a lot of *X vs Y* comparisons in terms of utility/value and what is usually missing from this analysis is a representation of that utility/value over time.
Gold! You can't eat Gold, you'll starve. Buy bullets instead, etc.
That is one of the reasons I usually recommend shtfschool.com in these threads. In addition to a bunch of other useful information, he recommends that you consider near, mid and long-term value of items when stockpiling.
Absolutely cover your necessities and know ahead of time that, for most of us, no matter how thorough your prep, you'll eventually need something.
An item that has value 2 days into a collapse may not have as much value 2 weeks in, or 2 months.
So yes, do the things that others here are recommending and then look further.
What can I acquire now that will be useful for bartering with later?
An example that the shtfschool guy uses is gold. Guy's kid is sick. How much gold will he part with for his son not to die? Short answer is, "all of it".
Consider comfort items as well. How much will they be of value to you? How about others?
In hard times, many people can run a still. How many can grow tobacco? What would an addict trade for a pack of smokes that will bring him a feeling of calmness, comfort and nostalgia in a broken time, that cost you next to nothing, when times are hard?
Start thinking beyond “what do I need to do to provide for my families basic needs” to “what kind of role will I have in a post-collapse community”.
Speaking of community. The time to start building that is now.
Don't know your neighbor? It might be time to change that.
Do you have a group of friends you can depend on? Might be a good idea to organize and start training if you haven't already.
"real men use .556. 6.5 creedmoor and 7.62 are good choices as well; 7.62 has been a staple"...okay faggot, now here's the choice for serious men...SKS 7.62 x 39 with bayonet C/W 10,000rnds min in tin, .270 WSM or 300 WM, .357 S&W 7rnd revolver and a .45 1911, or .40 cal. or 9mm min 500rnds each caliber. ..and somehow I'll drag my Steyer HS50 M1 with 1,000 rnds...and you better have good stashes for your ammo and misc weapons

I am looking into water filtration. I have a well, and can see the river from my house. Also looking into a hand pump for the well. Already have filtration straws for emergencies, but I need a bucket system in the event I don’t get a well pump in time. Where I live though, the river will dry up, due to politics before the well does. Long story.

Ohh. Reusable pads might be a good item for ladies, better than literal rags which most will have to resort to. Also Reusable nappies modern or squares and snappis.

Do you think reusable is the way to go for profiteering during SHTF or temporary supply shortages or will most still want disposables? I know the idea of period undies/pads is gaining traction but most are still icked out at the idea of washing them.
Well you would want to sell period cups to white right wing people and tampax to everyone else right? When the shit hits the fan, washing period cups is going to seem not particularly icky, since we’ll have to start shooting the squirrels and pidgeons for dinner.

No, I wouldn't especially want to sell period cups to right wingers, I've heard stories of even now, in good conditions, keeping them sterile is hard (people changing then in public bathrooms aren't sterilising them) and can lead to toxic shock. A tampon would be safer if SHTF wouldn't encourage people to leave them in longer than they should.
Maybe I should stock up on a variety. I just don't think inserting stuff will be safe in that scenario.
I do think a temporary or mid term supply shortage scenario is more likely than SHTF. I see people eating rice and pasta not pigeons and squirrels.
