I freeze mine and toss it in the microwave for about 1 minutes when I want to warm it up for usage

There is shorter life associated with higher temps like keeping an SD card in a dash cam but for practical purposes the difference between room temp and the freezer is probably going to be negated by the risk from thermal shock taking it out for use. Make backups....

Doubtful. Writing to the drive is what causes flash memory to degrade. To a lesser degree having the device powered up to read from can also cause it to degrade. If it's disconnected it should last a very long.

light exposure also does it, which is why cd's are trash for data storage. the most likely thing to break on a usb drive, or any external storage, is the controller card. if that happens your data can still be recovered you'll just have to spend a little money.
