Waterproofing garments

submitted by Version6 to whatever 3.6 yearsOct 8, 2021 16:02:24 ago (+6/-0)     (whatever)

With the weather changing I've decided I'm going to try my hand at waterproofing a couple of things. Any of you have any experience waxing a jean jacket? Can I just use a parrafin wax/bees wax mix for that? And do any of you know anything about using lanolin on wool? I have a peacoat but it does let water through and I'd like to minimize that. Thanks!

I use mink oil on leather. It's not the 80s so I don't have a jean jacket.

I've used mink oil on boots and it really works great.

I sewed a man's watch roll out of duck canvas not too long ago and was looking into waxing this myself but the recipient didn't want to wait. As I recall, the camping diy sites had quite a few tips on this. I'd be interested in hearing how yours comes out if you pull the trigger.

Your skills will make you a useful member of my crew when I shanghai you to sail off to... wherever it is one sails off to anymore these days.

I used to think sailing to Australia sounded like a cool idea. Lol how times have changed. Heck, everything about this boat was kind of planned arounf the eventual voyage to Aus and beyond. I guess sailing round the horn to eastern Europe could be a possibility. I also hear good things about the Netherlands. I wonder if they have much demand for lords of nougat there.

But as per usual, I digress..

In addition to sewing, I also make the best White bread you'll ever taste... the Netherlands sounds nice, it's probably time for us to reconquer those lands anyway. I'm in.

You might want to see if you can get some spray waterproofing silicone at a sporting goods store. That stuff works and at a decent price.

I second this. Cheap and easy solution. I keep a can in the cabinet to spray my shoes occasionally and anything else I need.

I've used it for years and it has never failed me. You may have to respray but it's still worth it and easy to use.

That's interesting.... Does it change the texture or feel of fabrics? Like if I sprayed a cotton track jacket, would it turn it hard?

I never had anything like that happen. Just had to wash and respray it to waterproof my jacket again.
