I'm going to go listen to it a few more times tonight. It makes me want to sing.
American women scarcely ever sing low in popular music. I can only recall hearing a French female voice sing in a low register and me thinking, I have French ancestry, that must be natural for us. My voice range goes both very high and low, apparently, and it feels really satisfying to use that lower range.
My mother's father could sing basso profundo, and on the other side of my family I now remember the men won the [city omitted] Festival every year, in every voice category, until they were banned from the competition.
