1. If he's a fake fascist then who is a real one? He literally wrote the book on fascism.
2. While I agree the fascists did a lot of extreme and violent things, it's a little hard to sort out fact and fiction as well as context given that their history is mostly written by their enemies.
3. Is it news to anyone he was a socialist? He defined fascism in opposition to socialism, but at it's core it's a socialist movement and it's hard to define socialism in a way that excludes fascism.
4. About him believing X in his youth... lots of people change their opinions as they grow up. It's not particularly damning if he was an atheist or anti-catholic.
5. Comparing the US war industry to the italian war industry is apples and bananas. The US was already highly industrialised before the war, italy was not. Mussolini did help industrialise the country but there's only so much that could be done in such a short space of time. Not to mention being a much smaller country.
6. Italian performance in the war is understated. They're similar to France in that many of their units were poorly trained and motivated conscripts, whereas others were highly trained and motivated elites with good equipment and leadership. They scored some impressive victories doing far more with far less than their opponents had. That doesn't really have much to do with Mussolini.
7. Racial heritage: Largely unimportant to his politics since he was a civnat. Also see above about a pinch of salt.
8. Being the target of frequent assassination attempts is not a sign of failure or impotence. Why would anyone want to assassinate a powerless man?
