This guy gets a mention in every computer science class and compiler book. He invented the Chomsky Hierarchy, which is basically set inclusions of simpler languages into more complex ones. He said one type of language is a subset of another having more power, and so on so: regular < context free < context sensitive < recursively enumerable. He was actually looking for a universal language computer within the human mind that he believed was innate, and as a result of that ended up ranking different grammers in correspondence to increasingly complex machinery. I don't know if he was the one to match regular grammars to state machines, context free to pushdown machines, etc. Since then others have expanded on this hierarchy. Imagine if he would have stuck to linguistics.
