It was a bait operation by (((the regime))), to try to discredit PV, by enticing PV to publish something whose publication could be litigated to death.That creates doubt about the verity of PV’s reports, and causes them financial distress, both of which make it easier to (((compromise))) PV from the inside, while prenotifying the NYT about this gives the NYT a hit piece that (((they))) believe ethically exculpates the NYT while they’re being sued by PV for defamation.

So PV were set up to be coerced. When that didn’t work, (((the regime))) sent the FBI/DOJ to try to pull apart the PV infrastructure by force.
