Anytime it's brought up that Irish were sold into slavery by the British it's always denied. I've read other accounts that the British Gov. General of Bermuda wrote requesting that slaves from Africa should be sent, since so many Irish died during their first year of slavery due to the harsh climate and disease.

To be fair the British also sold other British into slavery, it just wasn’t done on a mass scale as it was with us. Kidnapped by RLS is about a scotch noble trying to sell his nephew into slavery in the new world to protect his estate.

Even Mutiny on the Bounty, while not quite slavery, Fletcher Christians' family was in debt to Bligh, so Fletcher was 'volunteered' by his family to be crew on the Bounty.

"The Grapes of Wrath" should be required watching in schools. My parents made to Calif around 1940, escaping the droughts of the dust-bowl. I was the youngest 10. In the 50s and early 60s calling someone an "Okie" was the equivalent of calling someone a nigger.

Funny it’s mostly in the cities where everyone was so filthy like that.
I’ve asked 3 generations of my family (all farmers) and they all said if they didn’t bathe every day, you weren’t allowed in the house without washing up first, and that meant hands, face and feet before bed on non bath nights. And rarely wore the same clothes 3 days in a row even if you only owned 2 pair of things.
And that went for everyone they knew.
While the Jews were bathing twice a month and washing their clothes less then that.

Because it costs time, money (to buy soap) and availability of clean water. When you're constantly hungry and working or foraging for something to eat, and water that is safe to drink washing clothes slides down the priority list.
