Hydrogen is a clean fuel, but way less energy dense than any hydrocarbon chain, until you get it into liquid form (NASA cold type temps).

Although refueling hydrogen (if joe-schmo handing 5000psi H2 gas can be made safe) would be quicker than charging a battery.
