There are several potential answers to this question and I guess the shortest one is: cold weather
You may have seen the other comment (or many other comments) I made touching on polygamy.
In tropical regions where there is a lot of plant based food all year round, women and children are less dependent on males for meat. That means men’s function is closer to sperm donor than attentive dad/husband. In fertile mild regions, males can have great reproductive success impregnating many females. So horny males are favored over more monogamist males. Horny promiscuous males become the dominant type (genetically) but they all want to impregnate multiple uteruses. There are only so many uteruses to go around, so mother nature favors violent males in this circumstance because violen males kill off many competitors to become reproductively successful. Anytime you have males who can be successful at polygamy (impregnating more than one female ) you will see high violence and also high theft and high deception between males, because the name of the game is to hoard as many females as you can, and crime pays. It is a ‘hypercompetitive’ system.
In more civilized polygamous societies (middle east) you have patrilineal inheritance patterns as those societies became more wealthy from agricultural and pastoral economies. Men got wealthy and wanted to pass their wealth to their sons— this is when female fidelity becomes very important. (Hunter gatherers don’t have shit to hand down to their kids). Another factor could be cranium size. A big head is a thermodynamic advantage in cold climates but not in hot ones. Cranium volume does correlate to IQ. And IQ correlated to violence.
One more interesting trait to examine is skin color itself. You could look at what famed chemist James Watson has said on the subject. The melanocortin hormone system controls melanin production but also sexual behavior, eating/hunger and violence. The melanocortin system switches on in spring when light levels change, signaling that its time to become active again after hibernation or period of reduced metabolic activity. Animals need to produce more melanin for spring/summer but also eat, and mate, and fight competitors for mates. These behaviors are all linked to the melanocortin system. Its been observed in studies of many different species that the more darkly pigmented individuals tend to be more aggressive.
TLDR cold winters “civilized” some of us alot in the last 50,000 years or so, but not others. Specifically because it favored monogamy and traits that complement monogamy, and probably a lot of other ‘conservative’ behaviors like planning ahead which takes brains and emotional restraint. Other things like big head and and changes to our melanocortin system might have made us smarter, less rapey, less violent.
Unfortunately some populations can sort of regress if they become a little to prosperous or move back into more tropical climates. I think theres reason to think this has happened to some groups.

In more civilized polygamous societies (middle east) you have patrilineal inheritance patterns as those societies became more wealthy from agricultural and pastoral economies. Men got wealthy and wanted to pass their wealth to their sons— this is when female fidelity becomes very important. (Hunter gatherers don’t have shit to hand down to their kids). So in some polygamous societies female sexuality is restricted. But male promiscuity still causes high violence, theft, corruption and wealth hoarding. Hoarding females is the real incentive behind hoarding money. Middle easterners and a lot of other browns are always trying to cheat each other because they descend from polygamous populations.
The further north you go, the more populations are/were forced in to highly conservative reproductive patterns (monogamy) because males become the only food source in winter (hunting) and the most efficient allocation of male economic resources is through monogamy. Polygamists’ kids just die of starvation. The effect of cold winters favoring monogamists caused violence and theft to be disincentivized. There are a whole bunch of traits like high economic productivity, high status of females, lack of rape and violence, higher economic egalitarianism which correlate with monogamy. These traits are implemented at the genetic level and are selected/deselected in various environments. Cold long winters seems to be a big factor as well as patrilineal inheritance which favored males that cooperate and work hard instead of murdering and fucking all day.
Another factor could be cranium size. A big head is a thermodynamic advantage in cold climates but not in hot ones. Cranium volume does correlate to IQ. And IQ correlated to violence.
One more interesting trait to examine is skin color itself. You could look at what famed chemist James Watson has said on the subject. The melanocortin hormone system controls melanin production but also sexual behavior, eating/hunger and violence. The melanocortin system switches on in spring when light levels change, signaling that its time to become active again after hibernation or period of reduced metabolic activity. Animals need to produce more melanin for spring/summer but also eat, and mate, and fight competitors for mates. These behaviors are all linked to the melanocortin system. Its been observed in studies of many different species that the more darkly pigmented individuals tend to be more aggressive.
TLDR cold winters “civilized” some of us alot in the last 50,000 years or so, but not others. Specifically because it favored monogamy and traits that complement monogamy, and probably a lot of other ‘conservative’ behaviors like planning ahead which takes brains and emotional restraint. Other things like big head and and changes to our melanocortin system might have made us smarter, less rapey, less violent.
Unfortunately some populations can sort of regress if they become a little to prosperous or move back into more tropical climates. I think theres reason to think this has happened to some groups.
