The next scenes were the bear ripping him to shreds and the bear family feeding on his corpse.
I had a college friend who went on expeditions to Churchill, Manitoba during the summer. These were animal-loving biologists, but they always carried a rifle with them because you never, ever fuck around with polar bears.
I asked him if he ever had any encounters and he related one story where they helicoptered out to a remote sight to research something. While they were working they noticed a polar bear in the distance. The bear started circling them and getting closer. Finally they told the pilot to fire up the "chopper". He did so as they started collecting their equipment.
My buddy said the scariest part was when the helicopter started, the bear made a direct line for them and began moving faster. Instead of being afraid of the noise it became more interested. The biologist abandoned their equipment and ran for the helicopter when the bear started trotting towards them.
They got in the helicopter and took off. The pilot hovered towards the bear thinking it would get scared or at least be annoyed by the rotor downwash. Instead, the bear got even more aggressive—getting up on its hind legs and swatting at the helicopter. Eventually the party realized that the bear wasn’t going to leave, and they needed to watch their fuel, so they headed back to basecamp.
They flew out later to retrieve their equipment and found that the bear had gone through it. The bear smashed what it could, and ripped apart what it could. I asked him if the bear was looking for food. He said “no”, the bear was pissed off and wanted to send a message.
I didn’t know anything about polar bears at the time and asked my buddy what was wrong with the bear. He said that was normal behavior for polar bears because they are the highest predator on the food chain in the Arctic, and have no fear of man. In fact, they have a nasty habit of eating people when they get the chance.
Again, you never, ever fuck around with polar bears.
That polar bear was actually another researcher that had been stuck in a costume and just wanted help with a zipper.
He was out there trying to convince the polar bears to accept grizzlies amongst them, because they were running out of space and the polar bears needed halp with the growing abundance of prey. "My fellow polar bears..."
Between 1870 and 2014, out of 73 recorded polar bear attacks there were 20 human fatalities and 69 injuries.
Not that many attacks considering how close polsr bears are to villages in the arctic. I wouldn't say they have no fear of humans. Not that I would fuck with one at all.
For context, this guy fed this bear when it was a cub. These encounters happened after the PB learned to hunt on it's own. Before that, the guy in the picture played a parental role, as it's parent had been killed by a hunter.
I still enjoy the Christmas season and getting together with family/friends.
I’m entitled to my opinions on Christianity as a whole. It has made my race suicidal and apathetic towards preservation. It also causes people to become highly emotional when presented with valid criticism.
Yeah its well done and really interesting but pretty disturbing because, ya know, he gets eaten. The film maker explores what this guy was like as a person and why he got in to bears and stuff. I found it powerful but grim.
I encounter the exact same thing all the time with my black bears...I had a cub on each leg just like little kids and all the while mama bear was wandering around checking out the new feed stations....FUCK I LUV MY BEARS.
