People only started using those stupid abbreviations recently. Trump was the reason. They needed the retarded populace to be interested in politics and what better way than a sweet sweet abbreviation. So just relax and grab a mnt dew at the kfc.
Before that, I remember the first time I heard it was in an episode of 'The West Wing' Rob Lowe was on a date and his pager went of and his date looked at it and asked 'who's POTUS?' West Wing was on from 99-2006.
The abbreviations may have entered into the public lexicon relatively recently due to the explosion of information available via the intewebs, but many organizations have used abbreviations long before then.
It would not surprise me that political figures have been given abbreviations for decades within their circles.
