Incidentally that's not strictly true. The part of africa where US slaves came from was famous for it's cavalry. They used to trade gold and slaves for horses from Arabia and Spain. One of their kings even started a horse breeding program so they didn't have to import them, but it only lasted one generation before they had a civil war and forgot about it.
