Most people will fail to recognize that it wasn't intellectuality working against the young man here, but purely rhetorical tactics. AussieCossack is quite obviously much more experienced with the rhetorical element, and he uses the props much more effectively than the young man. The young man was acting as if he was being given a genuine discussion, but that was never the plan and Cossack never did it.

For one thing, Cossack has a microphone, which rhetorically makes all of the difference, not just audially but visually. For the camera, Cossack looks like the 'news anchor' while the young man is naturally assuming the position of the interviewee, which in regular news-type situations often means a position of inferiority. This automatically stacks the deck against the young guy.

But notice how Cossack does not have a conversation. He goads the young lad into saying something, and then rather than responding to him discursively, Cossack actually only responds to the camera. This is a subtle little rhetorical gambit. It creates the appearance that Cossack is talking to a larger audience who enforces his norms, making the young man look like the 'odd man out' in front of a crowd - it's as if a nature documentarian is narrating for his audience as he watches an animal in the wild. This makes the young guy into the 'strange one'. He is never able to get a word in edgewise because Cossack is only talking to the camera.

Somebody more experienced would either have never walked into this trap, or would have used some tactic to derail Cossack's gambit. To me, the best bet - if you are going to go 'head first' for a guy like Cossack, is to also approach him with a microphone and a cameraman of your own. Put Cossack in front of your camera too so that you equalize the power of the 'mass observer' behind you. A good deal of Cossack's success here is just creating the appearance that there is an unseen crowd supporting him, thereby causing the young guy to appear to be alone. It's just social psychology working here, not intellect. If you don't look as official as Cossack, then his setup is going to work against you - one thing a lot of people don't grasp about the psychology of modern media is how much the perspective shift influences authority. Cossack appears like the authority, and the young man winds up looking like some ordinary college kid.

One other mistake the young fella makes is not dominating the conversation by making statements/claims. He makes the massive error of floating questions to Cossack as a response: "So you believe the Holocaust?" You can't float questions to people like Cossack. He's gonna railroad you because you basically gave the ball back to him. You're better off to just make authoritative claims, even to ignore Cossack's objections and just become a wall of statements. You can't give Cossack too much room to set the frame, just keep talking. At the very least, he'll get tired of trying to control something he can't, and he'll walk away, and you'll have a stalemate.
