Looks crazy kikish in that the legs are fully splayed with very little cloth (what age group does this start at??? yikes!) when there is no need for it.

Any type of clothing that allows that much leg freedom (even shorts) would be fine.
Even gymnastics doesn't need to have such scant coverings, but there is a more potentially practical reason for having the outfit.

I could never be in that crowd, and I have no idea what the "athlete" is thinking.

Looks pretty silly to me. Also looks like it'd be a huge pain in the ass to perform.
