In the lord of the rings lore that Tolkien wrote, death was not a bad thing (as Gandalf explains in the last movie to Pippin). Sauron convinced men to fear death and this convinced them to become vindictive and selfish. Death is called "the gift of men".

Don't fear death, it's a natural part of life and it's not the end. Enjoy life, become a better person, create the next generation, and when it's your time, go out gracefully.

My dog died of Cancer. He was probably in a lot of pain but never snapped at anyone, never grumpy, just tired a lot. He was a good boy.

Mine died of something called "Explosive Heart Cancer" last thanksgiving. He never even got grouchy or anything, just had a hard time breathing, in obvious pain, and didn't want to move/eat much. He was always very gentle with children, despite often out-weighing them.

He was a very good dog.
