Taxation without representation is elementary school reasoning. sort of like, we went to war in <insert any US foreign conflict> to "protect our way of life" or "defending our freedoms." None of these are actually true, but the propaganda says they are.

We went to war over economic freedom, and the ability to do business with whomever we wanted to. We wanted to sell our ship timber to the Dutch and French, but that was illegal. We wanted to have foreign goods shipped here directly, rather than having to go to London to be marked up by a middleman (at least 2x) before it could be shipped to our shores, and only via british vessels, where it was taxed upon entering for being non-British. IOW, an item purchased in London might cost $10, but by the time it got shipped to the colonies, it cost $25.

If you had a cash crop, say tobacco or cotton, you couldn't sell it on the open market, you had to sell it to London merchants and trade factors, who paid you less than market value so they could make some, too.

So, your incoming goods were more expensive so London merchants could make more, and your income was reduced so London merchants could make more. As an American colonist, you were getting hit on both sides of the economic system, and THEN, London MPs wanted you to "pay taxes for your defense" and "pay your fair share."

That's a triple whammy economically, and the sending of the tea was just too much, it was the straw that broke the camels back.
