It's a cultural thing. They don't put the same value on names. That is why so many name thier kids some made up nonsense. They will use nick names more than thier real name.

But the thing with nick names is you don't introduce yourself with one. Your nick name spreads by reputation. So it is awkward when someone asks your name, but you can't remember it because you haven't heard it in 10 years.
