Those folks had a better track record than any "intelligence" agency.
A typical segment goes like this-
Robert Stack: Help us reconnect this family, separated over 30 years ago. Baby Michael Jones was born in Bloomington, Illinois and adopted out of St Margaret's Home for Children.
Screen shows black-and-white picture of toddler.
UPDATE
RS: Michael Jones has been found, living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His name was changed after adoption. Here he is reconnecting with his family.
Shows middle-aged man being hugged by an old woman. He's all grown up, but looks just like his baby picture.
Or the best ones-
RS: Help us find this serial embezzler and con artist, who has gone by 20 aliases and may be living overseas. Last known under the moniker 'Howard Moon'.
Shows a picture of a man in a wig and sunglasses.
UPDATE
RS: Thirty minutes after our broadcast, a tip was received about the whereabouts of our culprit. He has been found, living in this motel in Arizona under the name 'Jose Gonzalez'. Authorities were notified and he is now awaiting trial.
I don't know if these outcomes were faked or not, but it seems like people in the 80s with no internet solved more cases than not. Except for whatever happened to DB Cooper (good for him).
I used to watch it as a kid with my parents. The opening music always gave me the creeps, and it still does! I've heard there are online communities dedicated to solving cold-cases, but haven't looked much into it much.
Lol this is spot on. We've been watching the original episodes recently. I was wondering if the original airing had the Update parts or if it was added on in the next rerun.. how did viewers get a chance to solve and report if the episode was still airing for the first time?

Haha, same, after the kids go to bed. I've also been wondering about the updates, especially when they say "So-and-so was arrested, sentenced to 12 years, and has since been released". Maybe the shows were edited since then? I remember when they were on TV, they would say "on a previous episode", then give you the update. They must have organized them since then.
They made new stuff in the early 2000s and I think recently, but I haven't watched it because I'm a purist. Have you? Are there any good Australia mysteries?
It moved to CBS from NBC and added a co-host with a tweaked format change and it tanked. Lifetime bought the rights and made 2 or 3 more years. In 2007 Spike rebooted it with mostly repackaged segments - that lasted about 3 years. In 2020 Netflix picked it up with mostly new segments and updates that follows the original format. They also have a strong YouTube presence.
That's the problem with newer conspiracy/mystery shows. Just the same milquetoast stories we've all heard a million times. Coast to Coast AM had some wild stuff 20 years ago, now it's alternative health. The Missing 411 series was the exception.

My favorite part is the synth bass/percussion sound. Sounds like DOOOOM DOOOM
