The three Georgia mouth breathers who made “jogger” part of our lexicon, got convicted of federal hate crimes. Does this mean they get federal time instead of state time?

I sure hope so for their sake. Federal prison would be a cakewalk compared to the regular beatings and ratings these three morons have to look forward too.

Lesson here is, don’t bring your damn phone to a crime scene.

Your final point stands, but they brought a phone to a scene of them defending themselves and their property, which never used to be a crime.

Probably not. Usually what happens is you go to state prison until your state sentence is up, then if your federal sentence is longer you serve out the remainder there. I've heard of attorneys negotiating to serve time in Federal prison, though.
