Scott Morrison has banned Russian President Vladimir Putin from travelling to Australia, in response to his “unprovoked” and “unlawful” invasion of Ukraine.
From midnight last night, targeted travel bans came into effect on Mr Putin and remaining permanent members of Russia’s Security Council including Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, and Internal Affairs Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev.
In a statement, the Prime Minister said the "exceedingly rare" steps were reflective of the depth of the government's concerns. Mr Putin joins only a handful of world leaders who have been banned in the past including Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe and Syria's Bashar al-Assad.
"We are holding Russian President Vladimir Putin to account for his egregious unjustified war against Ukraine," the statement read.
"President Putin, Foreign Minister Lavrov and Defence Minister Shoigu are directly responsible for Russia’s unprovoked and unlawful further invasion of Ukraine.
"It is exceedingly rare to designate a head of state, and reflects the depth of our concerns. President Putin joins a very small group that includes Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Muammar Gaddafi of Libya and Bashar al-Assad of Syria."
