It's fucked up, but not really any more than other laws. If you kill someone in self defense merely trying to stop the threat then you're innocent. But if you become primally enraged during the encounter, say because your children are threatened, and your intent is to permanently erase his existence, then you're a murderer. Your lawyer will help you to frame this as fearing for your children, but we all know the evolutionary response. Fear quickly turns to rage and you want to nothing less than to crawl inside your attacker and explode with a force sufficient to red-shift his entire constitution to dc. That's murder by law and if you admit to it in court you're going to be convicted. Fighting is legal, but being motivated by the evolutionary response that actually equips you to fight is not. This is a clear parallel to tribalism and legal status killing vs lynching. It's only illegal when the evolutionary motivation, tribalism, is cited as motivation.

there's a story of a guy gaming with headphones on, got an uneasy feeling, took them off and heard a guy raping his wife. he got his pistol and shot the guy.

the fucked up part. the first shot killed him, had it not he would've been charged with manslaughter. he shot the guy a few times and was charged with desecration of a corpse or something similar, but those charges were dropped.
