I just got my first dual band hand-held (baofeng) and am studying for my technicians license.

I was gonna get a baofeng too. Lol. They seem cheap and decent enough for the money.

HamRadioCrashCourse on youtube is a good place to start. Good videos on operation and programming

I got a baofeng back in December, still havent got the liscens. Look up your local club and find out which repeater they meet on. My area meets every night of the week.

I got a long list of repeaters from repeaterbook that I've been scanning through. I can pick on some as far away as 30 mi, but I don't know my transmit range yet.

Handy Talkies have very short range due to low power and small antennas. 30 miles may require a base station with a tall antenna, or you might (barely) hit it with a mobile (car mounted) rig running 50 watts.

I have my General, and, just like you I discovered how much I don't know. Just to get a little more informed, I started learning how to solder.

Dual band gets you in the 2m (139-137 MHz) and 70cm (400-460 MHz) wavelengths

When the HAM vets aren't talking about radio antennas, you can hear some funny stuff

If you can hit local repeaters with that, you will be able to talk to a lot of people.

Man am not one, but I am a fan. A good friend of mine has an SSB aboard, and it served him well when he sailed around the world.
