During a visit by www.mobserver.co.za to the Doornboom farm, the journalists experienced a sobering reality, when the farmhouse that once belonged to the Viljoen family was looted.
The giant house must have risen from the plains at one time like an oasis.
Upon our arrival, it was noticed that the roof had been completely stripped of its tiles. What was supposed to be a jacuzzi was smashed to pieces. The rest of the house was worse.
The heart of any farmhouse was a traditional kitchen, large enough to entertain the whole family. Kitchen cabinets were smashed to pieces and what was left was left to rot. The only signs of a previous home life were two couches in the rooms and living area between building rubble. The pool, which can hold 250,000 liters, has been overgrown with grass and a lovely reception area and braai room have been destroyed. Feedlots, mills, greenhouses and barns were looted and left to the elements, and the lands were leased to a local maize farmer.
The question everyone is asking is: Why the destruction?
In the last few years, several economically viable structures have simply been destroyed.
The police lapa where major functions were hosted including weddings was demolished to the ground. Dairies, a school and feed mills were carried away piece by piece, until there was nothing left.
