While it's purely speculation, it's interesting to note that higher male to female ratio, would be present in cultures that are more hunter-gatherer, where protein would be a larger part of the diet. Likewise there would be higher male mortality from wild animals, disease, and general lack of infrastructure.

On the otherhand one of the big threats to agrarian societies, is excess males.

The study means to suggest that a fully vegetarian society would be a pussy paradise.
