There's no such thing as a selfless or purely altruistic act, the mere fact that you are doing the act means that you are making a judgement of its value, and acting in accordance with how valuable you perceive the act to be to yourself.

You always act out of a consideration for what it is that you desire or fear, out if your preference for the anticipated outcome of your actions, or out of the avoidance of the outcomes you'd prefer not to occur.

Your acts are motivated by the perceived value of things, hence no act could be selfless unless someone else was making your decisions for you, a players character in a video game is always selfless because they are controlled by the player and programmers.

A selfless act is an act that benefits others, but doesn't benefit yourself, but since what constitutes benefit is subjective there is nothing which could conceivably fit this description.

If you did something you had a reason to do it, the presence of a motivation is always what makes the act at least somewhat selfish.

You have to do something that you truly didn't want to do, and that requires a loss of control over one's own actions.

Semantics are boring to me. So many "Gotcha!" situations based on the definition of a single word in an entire paragraph. It's why I hate Socrates methodology, even as I admire his philosophy.

It is simply you framing a sentence in a specific way in order to get someone to "fall into your trap" so you can "prove" your superior intellect. The person was not worrying about a word trap, they were simply providing information. It's an asshole move, imo.

I only needed to get halfway through the first sentence of the title to know it was you :)

Just because you cant understand a Selfless act doesn't mean it doesnt exist.

The action itself exists, but it is part of larger considerations, is how I read OP. Like giving niggers free food, so they become dependent on it, also destroying the competition of real farmers. The act of giving someone free food in itself is selfless, but all the implications are not.

Even if you don't get into why evil people might take this action to further their goals, it can be as simple as a good person wanting to uphold his self-image of being a good person and to be a good person one has to be selfless at times.

I agree with this take, since doing selfless things without these kind of considerations is not sustainable.

Yall just shitty people.

Same thing goes for people who don't believe in Love.

Para I know is an aspie so it's obvious why he can't comprehend how other people can do things and have selfless aspects. He cant understand it so to him nobody can and this is just his sad excuse at trying to reconcile simple ideas that do not apply to himself.

Quite so. And "empathy" is bullshit as you cannot know for a certainty exactly what anyone else is feeling. You can sympathize, but never truly *empathize*.

I just for some reason thought that was somehow relevant. Sobriety fucks up my brain. Sry.

How is it selfless when it is your dog and you get enjoyment out of your dog being happy?

Altrui just means somebody else. An action propelled by somebody else is altruism. Slavery. Manipulation.

We feed others here because their rotted corpses cause disease. We feed those similar to us because they're similar to us, and there should be a collective interest in seeing if they have anything to offer if they don't starve to death.

Well sure, but isn't his point that the motivation behind the altruism is always essentially selfish, since we never stop being our own selves. Or something.

Can i do it for the lulz?

[ - ] Paradoxical003 [op] 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 24, 2022 09:21:19 ago (+0/-0)

Why yes, yes you can.
Gaining pleasure from your actions through the lulz is just as selfish as gaining pleasure from your actions through empathic response.

Trolling and charitable acts both produce dopamine as the reward to seeing the results of your actions upon others.

What the world needs from White Males is less compassionate acts and more heartless ones tbh.

You have discovered a secret of consciousness. Only by giving yourself to something larger do you have any control over any aspect of reality in a way that takes you somewhere new.

Everything else is a script playing over and over.

I think it might be and part of the reason why people think we need to feel God's presence to be Good people.
