My guess is that the "pressure pig" was being forced through the line and it ended up parked too close to the unfinished "joining"...it's not the welder/fitter's fault that this splice joint blew out, no doubt he was in the "root pass" stage...may seem like someone doesn't know how to weld but the "tack" spots and preliminary root pass did hold that line together until the pig pressure overcame the integrity of the weld. After 4 years of pipeline construction that's my guess anyways.

Hes torch cutting it apart and tension in the metal sprung it like that when it broke lose.

Looked to me like he was grinding but I'm going to have another look.
