I find the way they cling to the concept of passing ironic.
By saying passing it means they recognize what they are not and that they are imitations. The peak of what can be hoped for being a convincing disguise that they can deceive others with.
Somehow the attempt at deception in their eyes does not make it a shameful falsehood but a truth that only evil heathens would dare to refute.
