One of ours didn't make it. He got to the point where he was going to turn to a chrysalis and then he just died. The others look great like this, though.
Then there are the innumerable ones in the front garden that we can't even see - it's kind of dense with milkweeds and stuff right now. The backyard ones end up in the butterfly house, and the front yard ones are [mostly] on their own.
When we bought this place, there were two houses for sale on the block [a big old triangular plot, which gets larger as it goes up the hill]. We decided we liked the one at the bottom of the hill and just bought it, never even looking at that other older place up the hill. That one has like half an acre! And a weird barn of an old carriage house with a little workshop in it. Oh well... this house is more modern and probably needed less work - but they were about the same price....
Derp. The grass is always greener...
But yeah, the missus has a regular butterfly factory going on here. I guess it's the least she can do in recompense for all the cats!
Sounds peaceful either way. We're renting, looking to buy but the market is insane. Gonna wait for that bubble to pop and head back to the coast. I was not made to thrive so far from salt water.
According to my wife, something changes about me when I can smell the salt water. She's remarked on it many times. She says my eyes get brighter and my whole demeanor softens. There's something tangible about it, but don't ask me to prove it. I love the woods and swamps too, it's just not the same.
I just really enjoy my backyard and watching nature do it's thing. We've got about a dozen cardinals back there, a ton of squirrels, my various plants and cacti. It's super peaceful to watch it all play out. Got some flowers about to bloom that I'm excited about, and in another month or so my hibiscus will be full of blooms. I don't have a TV or play video games, so this is one of the ways I entertain myself.
Can I be offensively nosey and ask where in the states this is? My mom has been obsessed with Monarchs and as gone so far to pull off on the side of the road to snap pics of monarchs if she thinks she maybe possibly saw one.
North Central Florida. If she likes them she should keep Milkweed. It's the only thing the caterpillars eat, so Monarchs frequent Milkweed to lay their eggs.
Central NC here, and there may be some milkweed pods that were allegedly acquired from a rest stop on a previous road trip. Had a lot of difficulty making a weed grow in clay though. Funny that

I guess our species was just made to live near the ocean for some reason. Good luck to you in finding that better place!
