South Africa in the 80s was no picnic. Almost every other country had trade sanctions against them. Any South African sports teams that travel to compete was met with either violent protests or were banned from competing. Travelers to South Africa had their entry and exit stamps in their passports stamped on post-its, because some countries would refuse you entry if you had visited South Africa. Border wars from the mid-60s to 1990 fighting communist sponsored insurgents. Yeah, fun times.
