Yeah, there's on ytube clip of a dog handler that shows how to twist the collar or use a belt to effect a choke and lift up off it's front legs. It says it's about the only thing that works for dangerous breeds without causing injury - other than the hind legs but most peopel simply don't have the strength or determination to pull it off (pun).
EDit : I can't seem to find the clip anymore - all that comes up in shitty caesar milan and other nonsense.

The neighbor’s pit went after another dog on the street. Small dog. I saw it happen and got there pretty quickly. The PB had its mouth on the little guy’s head. Ill admit it looked like a bad situation and I didn’t want to stick my hand in there. So I gave him a kick in the head with my sneaker. I was slightly worried that he would turn on me. But he just let go and backed off. I didn’t have a hard time getting by the collar and getting him out of there. The other dog was not seriously injured.

I knew this dog pretty well because he played with my big dog and he played rough. He was challenging and would try to knock me over sometimes. If I had to guess, I would say by the lack of damage on the passing dog, he was “playing” and not interested in inflicting serious harm. But its hard to tell when you are about to kick a pitbull. It all worked out.

Yeah maybe an attacking pit bull will lie down nicely to allow you to do that.
