is voat.xyz a honeypot?

submitted by niggersarenothuman to AskUpgoat 3.0 yearsMay 12, 2022 19:07:00 ago (+19/-3)     (AskUpgoat)

Just asking because I've noticed some strange things happening on my account. For instance, I won't log in for a week, and then when I do log in, I see that my account has accessed a random thread posted only two days ago. At first I assumed my password was comped, so I reset it. Then a few months later, the same thing happens again. Is voat.xyz just glitchy, or are (((feds))) logging into all of our accounts, and some of these feds are retarded because they are jews and they forget they are logged into our accounts and they click on stuff which the site records. I'm kinda tech-tarded, but I do know how to keep my passwords secure (I've never ever had a single password compromised of which I am aware other than what is happening to this account and only this account). Anyone have an idea what might be happening?

Ha...we got this question on old voat all the time and it became a running joke. I have no idea what's going on with your account. This place works fine for me though. We're all tracked all the time and our data stored in giant servers. Life is a honeypot at this point.

People whose every movement is tracked by a cell phone worried about the FBI reading what they post on the Internet.

[ - ] CHIRO 3 points 3.0 yearsMay 13, 2022 00:07:47 ago (+3/-0)

I won't be able to find it, but I remember a video posted at Voat where the guy showed what his phone was doing all of the time, with no camera app running. It was like some silent process going on 'under the hood' on smart phones. It was capturing every environment the camera lens could see, registering all of the objects and basically tracking the kinds of things in your home, the objects you interact with, and the places you go.

It was insane. Always running. Between that and the AI subsidiary companies most of the major banks/credit companies have purchased, there is essentially a digital model of you and your every economic behavior. If for some reason your devices weren't doing it, then you're captured by a million other ones, and all of the dings you make when your devices pass by every other fucking piece of tech in the internet of things.

You might as well take the mask off at this point. If you think you're in danger now, it's only going to get worse. I'm not saying reveal your power level at every opportunity, but don't cause yourself a panic attack over your posts at a site with 150 users.

Exactly this...Chiro...do you like movies? There's some of us that do and watch them together online. It's a neat group.

[ - ] CHIRO 0 points 3.0 yearsMay 13, 2022 08:35:25 ago (+0/-0)

I do enjoy movies, and I appreciate that invite, fella. The chances are good that I would not sit down to watch them in that context, and I don't mean that to be rude whatsoever. The people closest to me are routinely frustrated because they never get me to watch anything. I'll watch a movie here and there, but it's usually a private kind of thing.

when I click into a thread, it changes colors. so all threads I've visited are one color, and unvisited threads are a different color. I'm on night mode, so unvisited threads are blue, and visited threads are purple.

[ - ] bobdole9 2 points 3.0 yearsMay 12, 2022 21:41:42 ago (+2/-0)

If you have gone to the same link before, it will show as the different "viewed" color.

You've stumbled upon a repost.

[ - ] uvulectomy 3 points 3.0 yearsMay 12, 2022 22:26:23 ago (+3/-0)

Was just about to say this. A visited link being a different color has nothing to do with your account. It has everything to do with whether or not your browser has been to that specific link before. So a repost is a repost. Clear your history and it will change back, whether you're logged in or not.

[ - ] observation1 0 points 3.0 yearsMay 13, 2022 10:19:46 ago (+0/-0)*

Thats not what a repost is. A repost is when 2 people post same article , but both thread links are unique.

[ - ] WanderingToast 1 point 3.0 yearsMay 13, 2022 03:18:32 ago (+1/-0)

I've noticed sometimes if I click on a post that's new, then when I go back, link is gone...

But if I go there via browser history, it's still there.

This is inline with the tech available to them

[ - ] niggersarenothuman [op] 0 points 3.0 yearsMay 12, 2022 21:04:54 ago (+0/-0)

[ - ] niggersarenothuman [op] 1 point 3.0 yearsMay 12, 2022 21:10:16 ago (+1/-0)

ah...that makes sense (i did mention I'm a bit techtarded) how in the world would my browser think that I've visited a site that I've never visited?

[ - ] chrimony 3 points 3.0 yearsMay 12, 2022 22:28:48 ago (+3/-0)

There are two possible links here, one for the story (off-site), and one for the comments. If somebody posts a link you've seen before, the story link will shown as having been visited. The one for the comments should not have been visited -- assuming you've been logged off for a week. Sometimes there is no external story link and the comments and story link will be the same.

[ - ] niggersarenothuman [op] 0 points 3.0 yearsMay 12, 2022 23:51:31 ago (+0/-0)

that makes complete sense. It is times like this that I wish I paid more attention in computer science class. I appreciate your reply.

I'm a web developer...I argue with browsers everyday.

[ - ] uvulectomy 2 points 3.0 yearsMay 12, 2022 22:27:02 ago (+2/-0)

Because the "new" post is probably a repost, and your browser remembers it from last time.

[ - ] GrayDragon 0 points 3.0 yearsMay 13, 2022 02:18:31 ago (+0/-0)*

Combine the paranoia, the non-technical knowledge, the impossible explanation, mix well. Add a pinch of alcohol and drugs as well. Bake at 450, and voila ... this cake post!

Yeah, the only way I see it making sense is if a submission or comments were left. Or he is looking at his browser history, in which case ... the FBI agent is in your house! I repeat, the FBI agent is in your house! Get out of there NOW!

E: Oh, looks like someone has a plausible explanation. Reposts in other subs and the link is considered visited by the browser. Another case solved by the Goat Detective Force. My shit Waterfox browser does not alter visited links on this site for some reason.

Saw some rant on t_d this morning complaining how everyone on voat seemed to be an alt or a bot now and thought the feds took over.

Your story reminds me of how one day a ton of people on MySpace suddenly had 2 or 3 "friends" that were previously hidden. Support shortly thereafter sent a notice saying it was a glitch and not to delete the friends. Of course, everyone who saw them, deleted them anyway. A few months later Facebook took over the marketplace.

no. they don't waste time on public forums cause they know nobody is planning violence on there. nigh all their resources go to infiltrating private telegram groups who actually meet up in real life.

when I click into a thread, it changes colors. so all threads I've visited are one color, and unvisited threads are a different color. basically, I go back a few days and random threads are highlighted in purple as if I had visited them, even though I hadn't logged in for a week.

[ - ] ruck_feddit 1 point 3.0 yearsMay 12, 2022 21:10:47 ago (+1/-0)

That's your browser history changing the color. Your phone or PC is doing it, not me logging into your account to troll system. It's local.

[ - ] niggersarenothuman [op] 0 points 3.0 yearsMay 12, 2022 21:14:23 ago (+0/-0)

I realize now that I am an idiot and should have realized this. still, it highlights threads I've never visited. any idea what might cause this?

[ - ] ruck_feddit 1 point 3.0 yearsMay 12, 2022 23:50:04 ago (+1/-0)

I'm pretty sure I've had it happen when people repost direct links to catbox images or youtube videos. The same link on old voat was used for the Rick astley video, for example.

We need an example.

[ - ] niggersarenothuman [op] 0 points 3.0 yearsMay 12, 2022 23:54:15 ago (+0/-0)

that makes sense. despite new voat not being as good as old voat, you and several others in this thread are demonstrating that new voat still has the highest iq people on the internet.

[ - ] o0shad0o 0 points 3.0 yearsMay 13, 2022 09:43:20 ago (+0/-0)

If you're looking for a "safe space" to call for violence (rather oxymoronic) then anything that can be traced back to you is a honeypot, and considering the government has the ability to snoop on all infrastructure-verified SSL traffic then anything that isn't posted via some anonymizing system will be traced right back to you.

If you're concerned that your free opinion will be made retroactively illegal and come back on you, then you're either going to have to shut up or grin and bear it. And the more people who do the former, IMO the more likely it will come to pass.

[ - ] carnold03 0 points 3.0 yearsMay 13, 2022 08:48:12 ago (+0/-0)

Any site that allows users to interact with each other is likely also being monitored and infiltrated by operatives whose job is to actively subvert the culture.

[ - ] AetherUser 0 points 3.0 yearsMay 13, 2022 08:06:52 ago (+0/-0)

This is a valid question. Instead of using a centralized, http site, overwhich a single entity has complete control, we should be using a distributed system, over which there is no authority, one which provides its own infrastructure, and which supports anonymity.

The answer is Aether:
https://getaether.net

If you haven't read the engineering decisions and philosophy on Aether's website, take a look. Aether is a far stronger platform for our purposes than this site. Get the client today and try it. You can find /b/Voat here:

If you have any questions, I will be happy to try and answer them.

I actually still see it that way, and the colors of my screen are og voat darkmode. Even the site logo is voat. Dont be jelly.

[ - ] canbot 0 points 3.0 yearsMay 12, 2022 23:42:33 ago (+0/-0)

When a site shuts down, then comes back from the dead, it is obviously a honeypot.

But what does it matter? Don't limit yourself to only using one site. Don't expect privacy on the internet. And take some pleasure in knowing that you are consuming manpower that would otherwise be finding other ways to subvert you.

If you participate in modern society you are tracked, herded and much more, same is on internet, everything has the potential to be used for nefarious purposes. Spooks etc. have loads of tools they can and do use. The only safe computer is one that is not connected to a network and not turned on on a locked box
