It's hard to keep sites like old Voat up. Most people that use it want real information but can't or won't pay to keep it going.

Bullshit. I've paid every chance that was a thing that was possible to do. Still have my cool goat shirt and everything! I mean, not like I donated *substantial* sums, but just a hundred here and there. I figured if everybody did similar, there would be no financial problems. Heck, my few hundred could probably cover hosting expenses for a couple months as it was at that time.

I guess the main problem is communist payment processors; we still lack real control of the shekel!

The other part is owning the infrastructure. Anyone that relies on M$ or Amazon is going to get the ax if Mr. Schlomo calls and tells them to "shut it down". GAB got around that. Telegram was late to the party and had to build out infrastructure.

Antiwhites are actively banning activists from the financial system. The banking system is another choke-point for us, hence the advantage of a system that doesn't require any infrastructure beyond that which the users already have. This is another advantage of Aether.

SearchVoat has been terrific, however, it has always suffered a fatal failing, and now that weakness is expressing itself: Centralization.

This problem of centralization is the same problem that voat.co had, and the exact same flaw that voat.xyz / talk.lol suffer. Dependency on a single entity for the system to work. In this case, searchvoat.co had a maintainer who can no longer maintain the site. It is only a matter of time until the same thing happens here on talk.lol.

The solution is clear: distributed systems

There is already a viable, distributed system which is well suited to Voat's needs: Aether

Aether was around before Voat.co and has been supporting Free Speech, anonymity on its network which requires no infrastructure beyond the client. It uses very few resources, doesn't require much memory or storage and has many Goats there already.

I might not use searvoat often, but it has come in handy a few times. Is it possible to download all the data and make it usable offline like a website?

The best way to try and do this is to convert a (soon to be extinct) website into a .zim file and allow people to browse and search it using Kiwix.

Verify this for yourself by downloading Kiwix and and a .zim archive of a relatively small (10GB site) and try browsing the site using Kiwix.

A while ago, we tried to use a service, zim.it I think to convert voat.xyz into a .zim but it wasn't readable. It should be possible.

It's not that hard really. You just have to learn the correct commands and input that into a program or website with a button for each command, copy/pasting (after cleaning) the inputted text fields.
