You should find that documentary on youtube about how a scarp yard bought all of Britains(?) old trains when they switched from narrow to wide gauge. The scrap yard essentially saved history since all the collectors and builders went there for parts. It was a cool doc.

Many of the old steam loks are still in service all over the world today with the Schichau plate intact.
