You're missing multiplying by 2 on the weapons. Those AR's are $2000 each.

$850 + $600 + $2000 + $800 + $2000 + $800 = $7050. Give or take a few hundred, since I think those scopes might be a little cheaper, but the magazines are probably twice what you've got listed. Bump it 1200 on mags, and price per round to $0.75 (which is common nowadays), and you easily hit $8k

I admit, I don't know all the details. Did he live at home? Did he have to buy all his own food and rent and car insurance etc?

Yeah, back in the 90's my little brother saved a substantial amount of money $2300 when he was 16. This was '98. He just didnt have a reason to spend it. It was washing dishes at a small cafe type place. It didnt take him long either.
