Diverticulitis update

submitted by 1Icemonkey to AskUpgoat 3 yearsMay 30, 2022 14:54:56 ago (+25/-1)     (AskUpgoat)

Went in for CT scan and lab work as scheduled. While I’m in the lab, my doctor gets the scan results and is blowing up my phone. Tells me to immediately go to E.R. So, I walk myself down there and check in. First doctor comes in to see me and is surprised I look so good. Says I should show more symptoms considering what they found in the CT. I was in pain, but I wasn’t sure I was having an emergency.

Turns out there is a lesion In my lower intestinal wall and some leakage of gas and possibly more. He was certain I would need some kind of surgery. Of course they take the conservative approach and iv massive doses of antibiotics for two days and as a result, my lab work turned around and as a result I was healing up just fine. Oh yeah, got the Dilaudid too.

Walked out of there with more antibiotics and no pain meds. Didn’t really need them after that. Should heal up just fine. Still feels like I’m carrying a football in my gut but it’s getting better.

Good news for sure.

Holy smokes glad you're okay. Good on you for not taking the pain meds! I've had gall bladder problems in the past that felt exactly like a football was in my gut. Not fun!

Yeah, I’ve been down that road with the pills. No more.

I've dealt with this issue before too, but not as serious as your situation. No perforation or anything. But damn they can be painful. It's not a risk you ever really escape completely; it's a matter of managing your diet to avoid them. I used to like to chew popcorn seeds, if I was watching a movie or something. If you're a weirdo that also does this, then you know the seed kind of peels back in layers. Well, the doctor said it was likely that one of these thin membranes found its way into a pocket and caused the infection/inflammation.

No more corn seeds for me. Whatever. I just chewed on them for the mechanics, not because they tasted good.

Glad to hear you made it out alright fella.

Dammit.
I love the popcorn kernels at the bottom of the bowl that are covered In the little butter, light salt, pepper, garlic, and red pepper I use.

[ - ] CHIRO 1 point 3 yearsMay 31, 2022 00:19:07 ago (+1/-0)

Exactly. I like popcorn, don't get me wrong, but my favorite part was having the seeds to chew on during the movie or whatever. I'm also a seed guy generally.

When my father died he left a full script of Dilaudid behind, and me being not the best version of myself at the time stumbled at a moment of weakness. It's really good for feeling no pain, but these days I recognize that pain is something you should feel most times. Killing it is usually only putting a bandaid on a bullet wound.
Had to go to the ER recently, and they wanted to inject me with "something for the pain" and I declined. They sent me home with 6 Percocet 5mg, which I used responsibly.

Ouch! That's painful!

Have had some gut issues in the past myself that they swore needed surgery that also healed with antibiotics and dietary changes.

Stress and dehydration can be contributing factors for these types of illnesses.

Glad you're doing better

[ - ] 1Icemonkey [op] 3 points 3 yearsMay 30, 2022 16:18:03 ago (+3/-0)

Thanks, and regarding surgery, I was like, heck, do it, let’s fix this thing. Then they said poop bag afterwards and I declined.

[ - ] La_Chalupacabra 1 point 3 yearsMay 30, 2022 16:29:03 ago (+1/-0)

I take it the poop bag would be a permanent deal and require regular visits to the doctor/hospital (read: recurring revenue?)

[ - ] 1Icemonkey [op] 1 point 3 yearsMay 31, 2022 00:57:24 ago (+1/-0)

No, it would be temporary, but still a big fat no for me.

[ - ] La_Chalupacabra 0 points 3 yearsMay 31, 2022 18:32:17 ago (+0/-0)

I wouldn't agree to a bag, either, no matter how temporary.
I've had enough experience with medical mistakes to not trust doctors, and those were just minor procedures compared to having my intestines spliced to an external port.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer 0 points 3 yearsMay 30, 2022 20:11:06 ago (+0/-0)

Not a doctor but I imagine something sticking into/out of you may need regular maintenance, and therefore regular doctor visits and regular insanely overpriced medical bills.

[ - ] Boardallday3 0 points 3 yearsMay 30, 2022 17:00:03 ago (+0/-0)

I don't know man, make sure to keep getting scans if you're not getting the surgery. IDK what decision I'd make honestly.

[ - ] HeyJames -1 points 3 yearsMay 30, 2022 18:21:41 ago (+0/-1)

Yeah man! In my case it was a gallbladder issue. The stones are still there but the idea of being chopped up just doesn't appeal to me.

It's amazing what cleaning up your diet and managing stress can do for your health.

[ - ] I_am_baal 2 points 3 yearsMay 30, 2022 15:16:27 ago (+2/-0)

Glad you're okay and didn't need surgery!

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 3 yearsMay 30, 2022 15:23:34 ago (+1/-0)

If that shit is leaking out of your intestines into your abdomen you will be going back to the hospital.

Hope you enjoyed the dilaudid!

Glad to hear they pin-pointed the problem and got you on the road to recovery. Modern science can be amazing. Whenever something happens to me and I end up at the ER or the Drs office I wonder what would have happened to me 100 years ago? I took care of my dad until he passed at 95, he always said 'if I had known I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself'. He told me stories of when he got sick a couple of time in the 1930s and doctors told him 'well, hope get over it'.

[ - ] Boardallday3 0 points 3 yearsMay 30, 2022 16:58:50 ago (+0/-0)

Geez, that's really serious. Glad you're okay Goat brother.

[ - ] PostWallHelena 0 points 3 yearsMay 30, 2022 17:00:09 ago (+0/-0)

So glad you are doing better. Didn’t realize you were having a problem.

[ - ] Spaceman84 0 points 3 yearsMay 30, 2022 17:09:31 ago (+0/-0)

Isn't diverticulitis a symptom of gay anal sex?

[ - ] RMGoetbbels 3 points 3 yearsMay 30, 2022 17:24:42 ago (+3/-0)

Yes. That's exactly how you got it. Stop gay anal sex and you'll get better. You're welcome.

[ - ] zr855 1 point 3 yearsMay 30, 2022 17:18:37 ago (+1/-0)

Once it's completely healed up, start taking 3000mg of ascorbic acid (vitamin c) a day. It's pretty much fuel for your own immune system.

[ - ] NaturalSelectionistWorker 1 point 3 yearsMay 30, 2022 22:42:59 ago (+1/-0)

C for bacteria, Zinc for viruses, D for both.

Weird, that's the same thing my Dr.told me; Dr.Jewbalaski, you've heard of him?

[ - ] Version6 0 points 3 yearsMay 30, 2022 18:43:55 ago (+0/-0)

I am glad to hear you are healing.

[ - ] 9000timesempty 0 points 3 yearsMay 31, 2022 13:51:54 ago (+0/-0)

But still. The walls of your lower intestines are now compromised. You may need to be super strict with your diet. These things don't just heal and go away. You will need surgery.

[ - ] xmasskull 0 points 3 yearsJun 1, 2022 15:19:37 ago (+0/-0)

You must have '1Icewater' in your veins, glad you're on the mend.
