I had one blow up in my room. Was not thrilled about the nasty cloud that came from it. Luckily a fan and a window dealt with the smoke. Then on, it was LED only. They've only gotten better over the last fifteen years.
Didn't regular florescent bulbs (the long ones) have mercury in them? I remember seeing these all over the place when I was growing up - but never heard a warning about breaking them. Strange how the major hazmat push came with the compact ones.

The circuit boards of LEDs are very noisy for my radios. A well designed one isn’t but that’s not what you find on the shelves of Walmart. CFLs aren’t much better. I prefer incandescent light bulbs.
I don't do radio but the shit designs really bother me. I have a plan to run dc from a single power supply to lighting and have good drivers close to the bulbs. This means i have to rewire each bulb but would be great on battery backup as well.
I refused to ever buy CFL bulbs. When the old style incandescent bulbs were taken off the shelf, I bought a whole case of them on clearance. That stash lasted a few years, until I started seeing cheap LED bulbs for a buck at the dollar store. The cheap LED bulbs usually last me a year each before they flicker or dim.
These cheap ones last long enough that I can't remember when the last time was I actually changed a bulb. They're also plastic, which means they don't shatter.
The color of the light is what matters the most to me. Those stark, bluish white terrible looking ones just make me angry. I mostly have these nice incandescently yellowish colored ones that I like just fine, and I like my electric bill not being as horrific as it could be otherwise.
Not shattering is a plus as well.
I put the really horrible looking bulbs in the mother-in-law's room - she doesn't even notice, lol!

2700K is that classic yellow. My slightly colorblind ass is easily irritated trying to decipher what color that thing I'm looking at is right (stripping out the yellow).
Natural daylight is the way to go...5000K. My wife initially hated "that blue tinge" for awhile, but she eventually realized how yellowy everything had been.
Sometimes graphic design / color theory / light composition / print production shit I learned comes in handy.

Who wants to elevate an ordinary occurrence to a hazmat event?
Edit: Grammar

Granted, modern equivalent lumen output is about 1/3 the bulk as those big bastards.

what really matters for lighting is the spectrum and CFL's and all of that limit the range of light. this is bad for you for a variety of reasons.

Incandescent ones were only lasting a couple of months, and I've had one explode. CFLs lasted longer, but the LEDs go on for ages so far.
