I write essays

submitted by Paradoxical003 to whatever 3.0 yearsJul 7, 2022 13:33:30 ago (+4/-0)     (whatever)

I try to write short post initially, but I just get into it, you know?
The thoughts just keep coming to me and I feel compelled to put them down.
What should I do?

Write it. then summarize it for the post, "full essay in comments".

That way, I can read the blurb of the idea, and if it is iinteresting, will p[artake of the whole thing. If it's boring AF, I don;t want to drop 15 minutes digesting brain dumps.

Simplify thoughts. Write the essay, read and edit to shorter form.

This is absolutely required for longer posts if you want them to be good. Or even half decent.

Put your main thoughts in the post, and then add additional thoughts in the comments - hopefully as responses to others.

That way all of your ideas are captured but not all at once.

Multiple drafts. Start writing, get into it, big pile of words. Put it aside.

Weeks later, the thoughts come back. Capture again in another pile of words. Put them aside to.

Time passes. Draft number three.

More time goes by. And you are writing again. Wait! Didn't I do this before? Dig out the old drafts. Read them out loud.

The best draft is your ego protection draft. You can bear to notice the flaws in the other drafts, because you have already admitted that they were not your best one. But what were the flaws? Where did you go off on a tangent? Where did you explain an idea that has a name you could have used instead?

Explaining things requires giving examples. Maybe you can up with new examples for each draft. Now you have lots of examples, to use in a mega-post. No! Reject the idea of forming the union of your drafts.

Intersect your drafts. What is the small core, common to them all? Your final version should be the intersection illustrated by the best examples.

We noticed. Revise and excise. You should focus on getting to the point and trim anything that isn't absolutely necessary.

There's probably a pill for that.
