I think this is one of the better posts I've read on here.

I don't normally read these longer posts but I did for this one. Looks like one of my interactions I'd post on here. You did everything I'd do.

Except the sugar. I'm proud to be clean from any sweets for almost 3 months now. Only 30 but starting early.

Why did you order coffee if the whole reason you went in there was to order something that would put you to sleep?

There were a couple other details that read like fiction but good post either way. I'll suspend disbelief.

I left wafflehouse about a month ago.

I worked there less than a week.

Their manual for their entire process from order to deliver, is half an inch thick.

They use a grid system on their order pads, with dozens and dozens of letters.

So when you want to queue up how much of an order you need, say eggs or bacon, and you ask all your waitresses, they tell you 'order, single, double, triple' etc, and you have to convert that.

For every single one of them.

Instead of just stating the absolute amount of eggs or bacon.

Seriously.

See if you can put this together in 12-15 seconds or less:

waitress 1: "order bacon."
w2: "triple bacon"
w3: "plate with bacon burger (incidentally, a 'half' order of bacon, which is actually TWO THIRDS of an order)"
w4: "three orders, one double, one crispy."

Did you add all that up the 12-15 seconds? How much bacon is that?

And if any plate automatically includes bacon, they're explicitly NOT supposed to tell you. It's reasonable to assume a cook that knows the recipes, already knows this. But then it makes it impossible to cue up the individual ingredients for a whole set of orders, in-order of cook time. Because then if you ask all the waitresses for JUST their egg orders, you either skip the non-omelette plates that include eggs, or you have the waitress tell you the whole order.

Fucks the newbies up, who end up making too much or too little and pisses off both the customers who wait longer, or end up with cold food, and the waitresses who end up with smaller or no tips because of it.


Calculating your all-days (the total amount of an individual ingredient or food) is backwards. This isn't just because of what I wrote above, but because some of the plates (such as plates with default inclusions, such as bacon burgers), WHEN conveyed to the cook, must not be included when called. The type of burger itself is conveyed, but the waitresses, even if they calculate it for you, are explicitly, if they convey this information, supposed to exclude the subingredients of those additional plates, from the total.

So even when you have the waitresses do their job, and calculate the sub total of an ingredient you need to toss down (especially when its busy)--and you add together each waitresses order to get a grand total of what you need to cook (bacon, eggs, waffles, etc), you still end up having to do the conversions--on the fly--individually.

And what ends up happening, in practice, is, custom orders either get fucked, or are delivered cold.

Their training culture isn't bad though. Their process is just retarded.

I'm just a pleb line cook who has worked a lot of other jobs. And in the hundred odd experiences where I suggested some improvement, be it to management, or above them, it was ignored all but a few times. Worse, many places sideline you, punish you, or 'retrain' you, if instead of making a suggestion, you simply go ahead and make the change yourself. Most managers are hostile to process change and incapable of making a single significant decision.
And the consequence of this is things that are immediate problems, or offer immediate improvements, don't get implemented locally. It's looked at as either competition, or stepping on toes.
Any case, can't change anything. Once I realized how retarded it was, I just left.

I had Denny's one night, same story

2 years ago took a beach vacation to Florida, after they opened up from covid.

At 2 am had a craving, we don't have Denny's where I live and we had crossed one, everyone else was asleep so I snuck out and went solo.

Pull up and there are 2 homeless white dudes sitting out front a little ways away from the door.

Ignore the trash and walk in, there is a trailer park white girl at the register talking to some some old guy like she knew him, it seems like hes a regular. She was a 10/10 for a meth head, regular life 6/10. Would have probably been beautiful if raised right. Can tell by her speech she is strung out on opioids.

Her back was to me so I wait for about 2 minutes and make some noise, she turns to me and signals the guy in the back. Tattooed white dude young and dumb runs out and apologizes and seats me, says she will be right with me. It's only those 2 employees in the building.

5 minutes later and the old man is still putting in work, trying to flirt up the young meth head, he is stating he could take care of a young pretty girl, she is seemingly toying with the idea

5 more minutes goes by tattoo kid comes from back asks me what I want, says he will just go start making it, I order she still never comes over. Eventually he brings me my food, asks me if I wanted and condiments or more coffee and then he gets it.

Eventually he tells me to just head up front she will ring me up.

In all this time she never said a word, when I go to her to pay I have her run my card and tip 0. At this time I see the kid taking out the trash so I decide im gonna go around back and tip him where she can't see as they had a sign that read "We share tips."

I walk around back and the bums are back there talking to the young dumb kid trying to bum a smoke and hassling him about some food. When they see me they get quite and I hand the kid the cash tip and one of the bums says "Ohhh Melissa will be mad if she don't get her share" basically they threaten to tell the meth head that he got a tip in the back.

So these bums are extorting that kids 10 bucks for waffles and smokes. The meth whore waitress and the 2 bums, 3 people that just need to be exiled.

Bring back Exile.

Been a decade since I lived the 2nd shift schedule. I thought those workers were useless then; always grateful to get first-hand testimony on how bad things are now.

You should have tried a Waffle House. We actually went to IHOP a few weeks ago and had a similiar issue. The place was empty and the host was no where to be found. A line cook kneegrow stepped up and played host. He sure loved corn because he kept suggesting that as a side for everything. Anyway, can’t complain and everything went ok.

Another restaurant chain with real problems is Red Robin. I admit that fucking Banzai Burger rocks but I can only get it using take out. The last few times we went in the place was empty with a 45 minute wait. Other places are the same.

How does a recession with work refusers function?

I had a similar experience at IHOP. I had been to this one many times in the past over the span of many years. It's related to the covid policies. Many of the servers lost their jobs and were able to collect enhanced unemployment checks that paid them more than what they earned working. That's over now but the effect is lingering. The servers are in demand because the entire food/service industry took a hit. They don't care and they don't need to.

You have to find a small diner that doesn't have any corporate overhead if you want to eat out at 3am. These are the dirty places you have to build up a tolerance towards. Not sure how much it shaves off of your life span in so doing.

My brother-in-law lost his leg, to dabeetus. Now IHOP is the only place he wants to go eat!
