But B: my point about you and economists is because most economists are often wrong in their predictions because they are taught that humans always make rational choices. But people are irrational. Ignore the trash and walk in, there is a trailer park white girl at the register talking to some some old guy like she knew him, it seems like hes a regular. Her back was to me so I wait for about 2 minutes and make some noise, she turns to me and signals the guy in the back. Tattooed white dude young and dumb runs out and apologizes and seats me, says she will be right with me. It's only those 2 employees in the building.
5 minutes later and the old man is still putting in work, trying to flirt up the young meth head, he is stating he could take care of a young pretty girl, she is seemingly toying with the idea
5 more minutes goes by tattoo kid comes from back asks me what I want, says he will just go start making it, I order she still never comes over. Eventually he brings me my food, asks me if I wanted and condiments or more coffee and then he gets it.
Eventually he tells me to just head up front she will ring me up.
In all this time she never said a word, when I go to her to pay I have her run my card and tip 0. At this time I see the kid taking out the trash so I decide im gonna go around back and tip him where she can't see as they had a sign that read "We share tips."
I walk around back and the bums are back there talking to the young dumb kid trying to bum a smoke and hassling him about some food. When they see me they get quite and I hand the kid the cash tip and one of the bums says "Ohhh Melissa will be mad if she don't get her share" basically they threaten to tell the meth head that he got a tip in the back.
So these bums are extorting that kids 10 bucks for waffles and smokes. The meth whore waitress and the 2 bums, 3 people that just need to be exiled.

Been a decade since I lived the 2nd shift schedule. I thought those workers were useless then; always grateful to get first-hand testimony on how bad things are now.
The closest IHOP to us in literally in the same strip mall as a Denny's. We go to the IHOP on our once a month shopping trip to "the big city" (pop. 35K) for breakfast and it's always busy, but good service. We've tried the Denny's a couple of times, thinking we just got them on a bad day. But the above story is very similar to what we see in Denny's every time.
I use to be the kitchen manager at a place that basically only sold french style crepes. There was a bunch of beverage options, but if you wanted food it was some type of crepe. They're super easy to make at home if you have a Teflon coated pan that's at least ten inches across. Only four ingredients. I could share some of that if people are interested.

You do know that Teflon is highly toxic, right? Even the new “improved” pfoa free non stick pans are toxic. Ok, so you know that it's basically just flour, water, butter, and salt for the crepe itself. We use to use a sauce that was borrowed from the local Krishna community. It's a cup and a half of ground up almonds, cup of corn oil, cup of water, half cup of nutritional yeast, and a pinch of a spice called hing or asafetida. Another sauce we used was pesto, which is just a shit load of fresh basil, pine nuts, fresh garlic, olive oil and a couple shakes of balsamic vinegar.
We also use to mix Nutella with warmed caramel, cinnamon to make sweet crepes. You could get sweet or savory at the place, but the key is to use fresh ingredients.

You should have tried a Waffle House. We actually went to IHOP a few weeks ago and had a similiar issue. The place was empty and the host was no where to be found. A line cook kneegrow stepped up and played host. He sure loved corn because he kept suggesting that as a side for everything. Anyway, can’t complain and everything went ok.
Another restaurant chain with real problems is Red Robin. I admit that fucking Banzai Burger rocks but I can only get it using take out. The last few times we went in the place was empty with a 45 minute wait. Other places are the same.
I had a similar experience at IHOP. I had been to this one many times in the past over the span of many years. It's related to the covid policies. Many of the servers lost their jobs and were able to collect enhanced unemployment checks that paid them more than what they earned working. That's over now but the effect is lingering. The servers are in demand because the entire food/service industry took a hit. They don't care and they don't need to.
You have to find a small diner that doesn't have any corporate overhead if you want to eat out at 3am. These are the dirty places you have to build up a tolerance towards. Not sure how much it shaves off of your life span in so doing.

Another restaurant chain with real problems is Red Robin. I admit that fucking Banzai Burger rocks but I can only get it using take out. The last few times we went in the place was empty with a 45 minute wait. Other places are the same.

You have to find a small diner that doesn't have any corporate overhead if you want to eat out at 3am. These are the dirty places you have to build up a tolerance towards. Not sure how much it shaves off of your life span in so doing.
