Why do blonde babies turn into brunettes?

submitted by patchCodeUnsuccessful to AskGoats 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 12:26:50 ago (+17/-0)     (AskGoats)

This has been puzzling me for some time. I look at my baby photos. Up till about 3 years old I was blond haired and blue eyed. But, pictures from when I'm four my hair turned a dark brown and my eyes went hazel.

I'm not the only one I've seen this happen to. Friends had their childhood pictures where their children looked like they were directly out of the children of the corn.

Everywhere I look for any research on this just brushes this off as an increase of melanin. But, nowhere that I've seen looks into why it happens in a prepubescent stage. No research into if this is environmental, or purely genetic. In general, because it's deemed as harmless nobody has done any research beyond "your kid has more melanin then your other kid." Just wondering if anybody has seen any research come out about this that dives deeper.

Pretty sure it has to do with sex hormones, particularly the male ones. Prostaglandin drugs like latisse increase pigmentation. Melanotan is a self tanning drug that increases libido.

The melanocortin system is inextricably linked with sexual behavior. As James Watson pointed out.

Studies have shown that darker pigmented male individuals of many species, from lions to eagles to italians, are more agressive and territorial then their more lightly pigmented peers.

Women of the same race are more lightly pigmented than men.

So increased pigmentation seems to be associated with puberty and in particular, virilization.

When light increases in the springtime, the melanocortin system seems to turn on both libido and pigmentation, in time for mating season for many animals.

Why is it useful for juveniles to be light in color? Maybe lighter colored children look less threatening to co petitive violent males? Remember that these are legacy genes that control these traits. They seem to be the same across many species.

I could speculate that maybe blode hair is a good paternity test? If your wife is blond and you are blond and the kid has dark hair, something is up. Same with blue eyes. Therefore kids with lighter hair/eyes were less likely to be abandoned, killed, by a father suspecting cuckoldry. But I don’t really know.

It clearly has to do with sex hormones imo, but I am unsure of the selective pressures at play. But they are related to sex.

Tldr sex.

But I don’t really know.

Sums up Helena as a whole.

Oi retard, his hair changed at four, what libido? You are a perfect example of how having limited knowledge is dangerous.

[ - ] PostWallHelena 2 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 18:55:55 ago (+3/-1)

Dear butthurt faggot.

I do have a limited knowlege on the subject matter. I tried to make clear what I did know and what I was speculating on.

But my limited knowlege was more than what you brought to the table, which was nada.

I don’t know why you think sex hormones could not be in play at 4. There may be many genes which control hair increased pigmentation in children but absolutely unconditionally without a shadow of a doubt, sex hormones are major players in this process. You are retarded if you think 4 year olds don’t have sex hormones or that they can’t be in flux.

To review, I know more than you on this subject. That made you mad. So instead of contributing to the conversation, you pull an Amber Turd and spitefully shit the bed. You only succeed in making yourself look thirsty here.

[ - ] Ragnar -2 points 2.8 yearsJul 11, 2022 00:47:33 ago (+0/-2)

Blah blah banshee sounds. You bring nothing to the table, ever.
And apparently, you don’t know what thirsty even means. Get lost childless eggless barren boomer

Why you so jealous of grandma huh? It’s very unseemly. Maybe you’ll be as smart a me too one day. You have to study hard though sonny! You got some catchin up to do.

[ - ] Ragnar 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 11, 2022 17:11:44 ago (+0/-0)

You are such a retard, you actually equate smart with studying. You are a useless waste of oxygen. You wish you were grandma but your barren womb never carried children. You are just an old hag without a legacy.

And to the two simps on this forum, Helena is a 50 years old roastie with dried up ovaries and post wall looks

[ - ] PostWallHelena 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 11, 2022 17:45:32 ago (+0/-0)

And yet you didn’t answer the question.

You are such a retard, you actually equate smart with studying.

Pointless sophistry. Do you know your shit or not?

You didn’t know anything about the subject, so all you could do was troll people who answered and call them stupid.

If you were as smart as you imply, you would occassionally make an intellectual contribution around here. Maybe you’re moderately smart, but you are insecure around other smart people, which is obvious to other smart people when you do this sort of thing.

Absolutely no one here suspects that you are so smart you don’t have to study. Lol. You’ve made too many comments for anyone to give you the benefit of the doubt on that one.

50 years old roastie with dried up ovaries and post wall looks knows more than you. In ten years you will be equally dried up. Will you know as much as grandma does today? If you want to, you better start studying.

[ - ] Ragnar 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 12, 2022 00:50:14 ago (+0/-0)

Absolutely retarded response because you are a retard and a woman. You and the two simps here are the only ones who think you are smart, dude.
I’m definitely not going to be ancient like you are in ten years, you are fucking 50 ffs and still talking like a retard on a male heavy forum. I will tell you to get fucked sideways but no one wants to touch your antique ass

[ - ] PostWallHelena 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 12, 2022 01:13:21 ago (+0/-0)

Im not fifty. Im about ten years older than you. Soon you’ll be “ancient” like me, but you still won’t be as smart. Why is that so hard for you to accept, sonny? Its not even a contest, ask your bros on the male heavy forum. I hear your dad fucks antique asses for a living so I guess you’d know all about that sort of thing.

[ - ] Ragnar 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 12, 2022 01:17:03 ago (+0/-0)

Typical vulgar woman response. Crass.
What my dad does for a living is so advanced, you can never grasp it, you okd retard.
And I know for a fact you are not ten years older than me. You were 47 three years ago.

Testosterone in young men changes their hair. It does the same thing to foxes, there's a study in Russia documenting this

[ - ] patchCodeUnsuccessful [op] 2 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 16:25:08 ago (+2/-0)

Sadly didn't find a paper on that.
Estrogen (which is converted to testosterone) can cause skin coloration.
https://elifesciences.org/articles/15104v1
Also, saw an edit post by trannies talking about their hair color shifting with testosterone supplements.

Very interesting mechanisms though. Thanks for the info.

Yes I think you are onto the truth here, sex hormones darken skin, eyes.

[ - ] dulcima 5 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 13:43:57 ago (+5/-0)

I was born with dark hair and blue eyes. My eyes became hazel-ey but there's still a bluish hue.

In summer my hair can get blonde streaks. I used to wish I was a proper blonde like my sisters when I was younger.

[ - ] PeckerwoodPerry 3 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 13:14:35 ago (+3/-0)

I had blonde hair and blue eyes as a child as well. Now, like you I have brown hair and hazel eyes. I keep my hair very long and it lightens in the summer, I'll get a few light brown and red hairs when I get a lot of sun. My eyes can look somewhere between green and brown depending on what I'm wearing. I've never heard a solid reason that for those changes either.

[ - ] Her0n 2 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 13:19:16 ago (+2/-0)

I have hair and eyes like this too. My son's hair and eyes are much lighter than mine. We'll see what happens in his future.

[ - ] Spaceman84 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 14:13:35 ago (+0/-0)

In theory, shirt color affects eye color because the light hitting your shirt is reflected which then can reflect off your eye. The color of the shirt makes a difference because it will reflect certain wavelengths and absorb others. A blue shirt only reflects a narrow spectrum of blue light while acting as a filter for other colors.

It could also be a psychovisual effect that influences perception of color.

I'm not sure if anyone has tested the shirt color theory. Should be easily done with raw photography.

[ - ] YamaMaya 1 point 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 14:51:10 ago (+1/-0)

There is a whole fashion oncept behind this. Some lady came up with it and wrote a book on it. Its called Colour Analysis. It helps you find colours that flatter your coloring.

[ - ] Spaceman84 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 15:26:10 ago (+0/-0)

Which involves skin tone and hair color as well. I'm saying I'm not certain that anyone has put to test the theory that clothing can actually change eye color appearance (based on the physics of light) or if it is a psychological effect based on the limitations of the human eye and the brain's interpretation of visual stimuli.

It's a curse for the crime that someone in your ancestral line was race-mixing. Parents get a glimpse of what could have been before the curse sets in and they are forever reminded of their ancestors crimes against humanity.

I think I read somewhere the melanin increase happens gradually as one is exposed to more and more sunlight after birth but I couldn't find anything further about cause, or if that theory held any weight or have any research to back it up.

So if that theory is true I imagine there is a genetic range of "never going to be lighter than X shade hair/ eyes" and "never going to be dark then Y" but then for some years after birth the more sun or UV or whatever darkens one more than would be with less. If you had identical blonde, blue eyed twins and one lived in England and Equador, or one lived in the country and another in a city, would the one exposed to less sun have lighter features with age?

[ - ] patchCodeUnsuccessful [op] 3 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 13:52:06 ago (+3/-0)

Looking into what you said and some theories on pubmed. Apparently a photo receptor in the eyes, OPN5, is highly sensitive to UV light, and regulates melanogenesis. Now I'm wondering if I had sun glasses as a kid if I'd still be blonde.

Oh wow! Thanks for the follow up! I guess I have to go get new sunnies for the kids. I'm gonna get the babiators again because because you get one "free" pair when they inevitably get lost or broken.

[ - ] patchCodeUnsuccessful [op] 1 point 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 12:52:08 ago (+1/-0)

That would make sense. I spent a lot of times outdoors as a toddler, whereas my siblings did not in their youth. Strange to think that would be cause for a permanent change though.

[ - ] AryanPrime -1 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 13:39:20 ago (+1/-2)

not strange at all

Evolution isn't real, it's entirely made up...adaptation is real this is what you are talking about, your body adapted

Compounding generations of adaptations is evolution, unless you're a creationist christfag.

My brother in law is the same. Blonde haired, blue eyed baby, that later became dark brown hair and eyes.
My wife is similar, her hair color changes from week to week. She goes from strawberry blonde to redhead to auburn brunette. People constantly ask her if she dyed her hair

Northern Italian here, born with white hair blue eyes, hair tuned light brown at around 4 then medium brown around 13. Eyes still sky blue.

[ - ] goat777 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 21:09:14 ago (+0/-0)

If you were blonde as a kid, it means you'll look good as a bottle blonde. I encourage all white women to go blonde if they can pull it off.

[ - ] EGGOD 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 16:56:26 ago (+0/-0)

Happened to me too
I was born with soft, brownish blonde hair that gleamed in the sun.
My parents even kept a lock of my hair in a scrap book.
When I became a toddler it shifted to black just like my father's.

[ - ] Ragnar 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 18:10:06 ago (+0/-0)

The consequences of vaxxing us as children. I too was born with blonde hair and blue eyes and when I was around age 5 it turned brown and my eyes went Hazel.

[ - ] I_am_baal 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 14:30:23 ago (+0/-0)

I've got dirty blonde hair; it's not far from brown though. I started out platinum blonde as a kid, and as others have mentioned, I think there was some epigenetic change due to sunlight exposure maybe. It was sort of an abrupt change when I was 8. My brother started out platinum blonde too and remained that way. I was outdoors a lot, did a lot of camping, hiking, boy scout stuff, etc. My brother did too; so take that as you will. My eyes haven't really changed over my life though. They're still hazel and can appear blue or green depending on my surroundings and what I'm wearing and how much sunlight I've seen lately. My hair can lighten up too with sun exposure, enough to make people ask if I dyed it, but I don't think it leaves the dirty blonde range.

Interesting stuff...

[ - ] ItsBacon 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 14:02:59 ago (+1/-1)

Is it possible that this has something to do with immunizations received as a baby? Did this happen to people 150 years ago?

[ - ] Epictetus 2 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 15:04:13 ago (+2/-0)

All of my kids had blond hair and blue, green, or light hazel eyes. As they have gotten older their hair and eyes darkened.

They haven't had any vaccines.

My wife likewise never got vaccines, and her hair darkened.

Interestingly, as someone else pointed out, the further north we lived the slower the change. My wife and I grew up on the gulf coast, and were born with platinum colored hair and very light eyes. My two oldest were born in the south too, and darkened quickly. My youngest two were born in a more hyperborean climate, and have held onto the lighter features much longer.

[ - ] ItsBacon 2 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 15:57:20 ago (+2/-0)

Good reply. No one had said anything about it so I was wondering if that could be ruled out. Sounds like that is the case.

[ - ] Razzoriel 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 17:29:35 ago (+0/-0)

Same here. Two kids, both men, born dirty blonde, eldest now flax-haired, youngest still blonde, but not as much as when born.

[ - ] Spaceman84 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 13:57:04 ago (+0/-0)

My hair was white blonde as an infant and gradually darkened over 20 years. My eyes are still blue. Two of my kids were born with darker hair than they have now. The hair that came in is noticeably lighter than what they had to start with. The third didn't have much hair but has the lightest brown of them all. Their eyes didn't change much. Two with blue like mine, one with hazel.
